I like to switch up my dogs food to include healthy whole food. Below is a recipe I created and it is so easy, the hardest part is cooking the chickpeas. My dogs love this food and I usually give them this food for dinner mixed with a little dry dog food too.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup Rice (brown or white)
- 1lb Ground Turkey or Chicken (or Beef)
- 1/2 Bag of frozen veggie medley
- 1/2 cup chickpeas (not canned)
- 1 cup kale
- 1 1/4 cup water
Directions: I soak my chickpeas over night in water in the fridge. The next day I then boil the chickpeas until soft in 4 inches of water, it generally takes one hour and half, add water if needed. In a pot or dutch oven I brown the meat and then add the rice and veggie medley with 1 1/4 cup of water and bring to a boil for one minute, reduce to low heat and cover for 20 minutes. Let cool and add the fully cooked chickpeas and chopped up kale. I freeze my kale and makes it easy to break up and add while keeping the kale good for a long time. Store in an air tight container in the fridge for a week.
If you do use canned chickpeas make sure there is the least sodium in the brand you buy and wash before cooking. I use dry chickpeas to reduce sodium. Let your pups enjoy and know your dog allergies and adjust accordingly. You can also use beef too if your dogs can eat beef. I hope you like this recipe, it is easy and affordable. I like to give this to help with nutrition but I am not a vet please consult your vet as I have done. I give my dogs regular dry dog food, wet dog food, treats, and other foods they are allowed to have. I believe a variety is good but remember that they don’t need too much food and feeding what you can is still okay. Rice and chicken is affordable but also a bit more expensive than dry dog food. Maybe doing this recipe once a month is all you can afford and if you want to freeze it; it will keep longer for feeding sparingly for affordability.
See you guys next week! Ciao!
